Church History

Planted in 2021, The Cardiff Church was made up of fourteen committed Christians who relocated to the city. We are a multi-cultural, non-denominational Christian church founded and structured on biblical principles and standards found in the word of Christ. We actively live a lifestyle of discipleship with the conviction that our lives and doctrine are to be one and the same as in 1 Timothy 4:16. Cardiff Church is a member congregation of the International Church of Christ.

The International Church of Christ has its roots in the Second Great Awakening (1790–1870) of early nineteenth-century America. Barton W. Stone and Alexander Campbell are credited with what is today known as the Stone-Campbell or Restoration Movement. There are many branches of the Restoration movement and the International Churches of Christ was created from within the Churches of Christ. Specifically, it was born from a discipling movement that arose among the mainline Churches of Christ during the 1970s.

Once started, growth continued worldwide and by 2001, the International Church of Christ was an independent worldwide movement. It had grown from a small congregation to 125,000 members and had planted churches in many countries in a period of twenty years.

Beginning in the late 1990s, problems arose and the Church leadership was brought into question. Unhealthy expectations for members took its toll. In the early 2000’s, the Church founder was asked to step down and the Church started addressing concerns. Most notably leadership structure was reformed, greater unity was established, and discipleship was redirected towards biblical grace motivation. The late 2000’s were characterised by refocusing on God’s will for the Church and rebuilding.

The International Church of Christ is currently a family of over 700 churches in 155 nations around the world. The 700 churches form 32 Regional Families of churches that oversee mission work in their respective geographic areas of influence. It continues to spread the gospel and love of Jesus all over the world today. The Cardiff Church is grateful to be part of this world wide family of churches.
